🍂 September — Tending to What Matters
September always feels a little like standing in a doorway.
Summer hasn’t completely disappeared, but you can feel the shift. The mornings are different. The light changes. Routines begin to return. We start reaching for sweaters, warm drinks, and maybe a little more quiet.
For September, our journal writing focus is Tending to What Matters.
I love the word tending because it doesn’t ask us to fix everything. It doesn’t demand a fresh start, a perfect routine, or a long list of goals.
Tending is simply giving care and attention to something because it matters to us.
Think about a garden. We water it. We pull a few weeds. We notice what needs more sunlight. We celebrate the tiny new leaf. We understand that not everything blooms at the same time.
Maybe we can offer ourselves that same kind of attention this month.
Throughout September, I want us to return to one simple question:
What needs tending today?
Your answer might change every single day.
And that’s the point.
Week One: Tend to Yourself
We’ll begin with you.
Not the person everyone needs you to be. Not your responsibilities. Not the unfinished list sitting on the counter.
You.
What is your energy telling you? Where do you need rest? What boundaries would feel supportive? What part of your creative self has been asking for a little attention?
Try these five prompts:
What does my body need more of right now?
What drains my energy, and what fills me up?
Where can I set a gentle boundary this week?
What would rest look like for me?
What is one small act of creativity I can enjoy?
You don't have to write pages. Give yourself permission to answer with a sentence, a list, a doodle, a color swatch, or a collage.
It all counts.
Week Two: Tend to Your People
The people we love need tending, too.
Sometimes connection gets lost in the busyness of everyday life. We assume people know we love them. We think about calling someone but don't. We keep meaning to have that conversation.
This week is about noticing the relationships that nourish us—and considering how we can nourish them in return.
Journal with:
Who makes my heart feel seen and safe?
What relationship could use a little more attention?
How can I show appreciation to someone this week?
What kinds of conversations nourish me?
Where do I want to feel more connected?
Maybe tending looks like sending a text.
Maybe it's inviting someone for coffee.
Maybe it's listening a little longer.
And sometimes tending to our relationships means recognizing where we need more space or stronger boundaries.
Week Three: Tend to Your Joy
I especially love this one.
We can become so focused on tending to responsibilities that we forget joy deserves tending, too.
Joy doesn't always arrive as a big, life-changing moment. More often, it's tucked into ordinary things.
A favorite mug.
Paint on your fingers.
A ridiculous conversation.
Fresh flowers.
A book you can't put down.
Music playing while you're making dinner.
Twenty uninterrupted minutes with your journal.
Let's notice those things.
What simple pleasures bring me joy?
What makes me feel curious and alive?
When was the last time I did something just for fun?
What hobbies or interests light me up?
How can I create more moments of joy this week?
You could even dedicate a journal page to evidence of joy.
Collect little scraps from your week. Add photographs, receipts, paint swatches, words, doodles, packaging, flowers, or whatever represents the tiny moments you don't want to forget.
Week Four: Tend to What You're Growing
By the end of September, we'll turn our attention toward what's quietly growing in our lives.
Some things we're growing are obvious—a business, a creative project, a new habit, a relationship.
Others are harder to see.
Maybe you're growing more confident.
More peaceful.
More curious.
More willing to say no.
More willing to say yes.
Growth doesn't always look impressive from the outside.
Sometimes the most important growth is happening underneath the soil.
Consider:
What dreams or goals am I nurturing?
What small step can I take toward something I want?
What habits support the life I want to create?
How can I be more patient and kind with my growth?
What am I planting now that I hope to see bloom later?
I especially love that last question.
We spend so much time looking for the bloom that we forget to honor the planting.
Your September Journal Doesn't Have to Be Perfect
Please don't turn Tending to What Matters into another thing you have to keep up with.
Miss a day? Come back tomorrow.
Don't feel like writing? Glue something down.
Don't know what you're feeling? Make a list.
Have five minutes? Write for five minutes.
Have an afternoon? Make a giant messy spread.
Your journal can hold all of it.
This month isn't about creating a perfect September journal.
It's about paying attention.
What matters to me?
What have I been neglecting?
What deserves more of my attention?
What am I ready to nurture?
And maybe most importantly:
What needs tending today?
Start there.
A little attention.
A little care.
A little intention.
Day by day, those small acts become a life we've tended with love.
