Staying Present in Your Art Practice
Staying present in your art practice is such a great way to listen to your intuition and create pieces that literally feed your soul. I have little rituals that I do when I set down to create and I really have found this is helpful for keeping me present in my practice.
- Gather supplies—gather anything you would like to create so that you do not have to stop in the middle of your practice to find a supply. I make sure I have clean water and a fresh palette ready to go. Nothing breaks my flow like no water to clean my brushes.
- Grab a drink and a special treat. I like to have herbal tea and a plate of veggies to snack on. I always have one piece of Italian chocolate and one ginger chew. I always have my water bottle filled and close by.
- Light a candle or turn on your diffuser with your favorite scent.
- Before you begin stretching your hands, shoulder, and neck. Doing this before you start allows you to stay in the creative zone longer without getting stiff. If I am sitting longer than an hour I will stretch again. I try to do this about every hour.
- I begin by taking a few deep slow breaths. Breathing really helps connect us to the present moment. Clearing your thoughts of yesterday, tomorrow, and staying here and now.
- I set an intention before I start. Sometimes I will create a little vignette that has my intention written out and keep it close by.
- Dive in. Start creating and be kind to yourself.
